No Internet - for hours or days?

As an activity after our visit in Austria we had planned to og one day of school without internet access. While we were planning this Mother nature took over and sent a storm to the western coast of Norway. This was a big storm and many in our region lost power and internet connection because of the storm, and some were without internet access for days.

We decided to use this to our advantage and made our students answer a questionnaire about their feelings when they did not have internet connection. The results that came out of this questionnaire is what we will show here.

Of the answers to the questionnaire 70 students replied that they had lost their internet access, and 31 of these were without internet access for more than 24 hours.

Our second question was what did they feel when they did not have access to the internet.

8 students did not mind it, 26 thought it was a bit annoying, 12 thought it was very annoying and 8 felt lost.

nett følelse

The replies showed different reasons for what was worst about not having an internet connection; 25 said it was that they could not talk to family or friends, 14 said it was that they could not play games, 17 said it was that they could not use social media and 12 said it was that they could not do schoolwork that was the worst.

When asked if they got restless without the internet 48 answered no, 21 answered yes and 9 answere yes very much so.

The next question was if they got irritated about not losing the connection. 32 answered no, 32 answered yes somewhat and 16 answered yes very much so.

nett irritert

When asked if there was anything positive about not having internet access 44 students said no, 16 said yes because all of the chatter on social media was gone, and 17 said yes because I got more time to do other things.

nett positivt

We also asked students whether they believe they are addicted to the internet. 20 of them said not to much, 37 said they are a bit addicted, 24 said they are very addicted and 4 said they are completely addicted.

nett avhengig

This shows that there needs to be done some work in contolling the internet use for some of the Norwegian students, and that hopefully this project will be of help.
